Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody was indicted today (27) before the Colombo High Court on a corruption charge.

The charges were filed before Colombo High Court Judge Rashantha Godawela. The accused appeared in court in response to a summons issued earlier.

Following the indictment, the court ordered that the accused be released on two sureties of Rs. 1 million each. The court also directed him to submit a report after providing his fingerprints.

According to the charges filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption, the accused is alleged to have caused a loss of Rs. 8,859,708 to the government by granting an advantage to a private company during a procurement process while serving at the Lanka Fertilizer Company in 2016.

The Bribery Commission has further charged the defendant under Section 70 of the Bribery or Anti-Corruption Act for the offence of bribery.
