According to the Department, this climatic phenomenon is likely to have an impact on the southwest monsoon weather pattern.
The Department further notes that an El Niño condition has already developed in the Pacific Ocean, and its effects are expected to continue for approximately 11 months at varying intensities.
Meanwhile, an awareness discussion on the measures required to address the possible impacts of the El Niño effect on weather conditions in Sri Lanka is scheduled to take place today (10).
The discussion will be held at the Department of Meteorology, with officials representing 20 key sectors expected to participate. These include Irrigation, the Mahaweli Authority, Disaster Management, Agriculture, Agrarian Development, and Water Supply.
