The All Ceylon Egg Producers Association has decided to increase the price of a white egg to Rs. 41 and a red egg to Rs. 42 with effect from tomorrow (20).
Speaking at a press conference held in Kuliyapitiya, Association Chairman Sarath Ratnayake stated that the government and relevant authorities are directly responsible for the increase in egg prices.
He identified several key factors that have contributed to the price increase. The complete cessation of corn imports, coupled with insufficient local production, has had a severe impact on the egg industry.
He further explained that the use of substitutes such as rice instead of corn has affected the health and digestive systems of the animals, resulting in a 20 to 30 percent decline in production.
In addition, a large number of animals have died due to fraudulent traders mixing chemicals and medicines into animal feed, he alleged.
The Chairman further alleged that farmers are facing severe economic hardship amid this crisis and that the authorities have yet to provide a proper solution to the issue.
