The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has decided to suspend the officers responsible for preparing the controversial Grade 6 modules. The decision is set to take effect from today (19), and includes two senior-level officers.
The decision follows a preliminary investigation report submitted by former Secretary Ranjith Ariyaratne, who was appointed to conduct the inquiry and provide recommendations on the matter. A special meeting of the Governing Council of the National Institute of Education (NIE) was held the day before yesterday (17), during which the report was presented and discussed in detail.
Although the Governing Council is scheduled to convene again later this week to further review certain aspects of the report, ministry sources confirmed that the suspension decision will be implemented prior to that meeting.
According to the report, the issues identified in the Grade 6 modules were the result of negligence and procedural irregularities on the part of the officers involved.
Ministry sources further stated that a formal investigation into the incident will be launched immediately, and that strict disciplinary action will be taken against those found responsible following the completion of the investigation.
