Mr. Dullas Alahapperuma and other Freedom National Assembly MPs staged a press conference this morning at Parliament Stadium, protesting the fact that they would not be allowed to speak in Parliament.

Mr. G. L. Peiris, the group’s Member of Parliament, stated that the government’s repression is being carried out not only in the country but also in the chamber of Parliament.

The MP added that the administration has not even granted 13 MPs the chance to speak in the chamber today, and that this brazen violation of one of MPs’ fundamental rights, the right to free expression, is eroding parliamentary democracy.

Mr. G. L. Peiris also stated that the Commonwealth Parliamentary Organization intends to notify the Inter-Parliamentary Organization and the SAARC Regional Organization of this development.

He stated, “Let us form the National Assembly and work together,” and 13 MPs were denied the right to speak.

Members of the Freedom National Assembly, Dallas Alahpperuma, Prof. Charita Herath, Prof. Channa Jayasumana, Attorney at law Wasantha Yapa Bandara, Prof. Gunapala Ratnasekara, Attorney at law Udayana Kiridigoda, and Dr. Tilak Rajapaksa, as well as members of Parliament, attended this event.
