In a significant political development, the opposition led by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has successfully assumed control of several local government institutions through open voting. Meanwhile, Dilith Jayaweera, leader of the Sarvajana Balawegaya, has reportedly instructed his party’s Members of Parliament to refrain from voting for their own party’s candidates in the upcoming elections.
This directive is said to have been issued following attempts by the SJB to take control of six local government bodies just yesterday.
Despite this internal directive, Jayaweera made a public statement prior to the vote for positions in the Colombo Municipal Council, declaring that his party would support candidates from the opposition. However, after the election concluded, SJB candidate Riza Sarook claimed that the two MPs from Sarvajana Balawegaya did not vote for him, instead casting their votes for candidate Malaima.
Adding to the controversy, recent political discussions have alleged that Dilith Jayaweera is covertly backing the Malima government and is involved in a clandestine effort to undermine the opposition.
