DIG W. G. J. Senadhira, in charge of traffic control and road safety, stated that in the future, drivers who operate vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or drive carelessly, will face action under both traffic and criminal law.
Speaking at a media briefing held today, the DIG noted that the number of road accidents in Sri Lanka has increased this year compared to last year.
He pointed out that the primary reason for this rise is the use of drugs and alcohol. DIG Senadhira emphasized that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has issued orders to ensure that such cases will be prosecuted under criminal law, in addition to traffic law, in the future.
“Compared to last year, road accidents have increased by 271 this year, and the number of deaths has risen by 317,” DIG Senadhira said. “However, serious accidents show a general decrease. The main reason for the increase in accidents is the negligence and carelessness of drivers, which has had a significant impact.
“Upon examining daily fatal accidents, pedestrians are most affected, accounting for 31% of accidents annually. Motorcyclists, pillion riders, and three-wheeler drivers are also heavily involved. It is crucial to convey that many drivers under the influence of drugs and alcohol are the primary cause of these accidents. The IGP has confirmed that in future, anyone driving carelessly under the influence of alcohol or drugs will face legal action under both traffic and criminal law.”
