Attorney General Presidents counsel Sanjay Rajaratnam has instructed the Sports Minister to initiate an investigation into the conduct of cricketer Dhanushka Gunathilaka, who has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman while participating in the T20 World Cup in Australia.
The Attorney General has also advised Minister Roshan Ranasinghe to impose a complete ban on the cricketer preventing him from participating in professional cricket or any other sport.
It is said that the Attorney General has issued this letter after analyzing the contents of the report compiled by the committee headed by retired High Court Judge Mrs. Sarojani Kusala Weerawardena.
This committee has been appointed to investigate the allegations regarding the conduct of the Sri Lankan cricket team during the T20 World Cup.
The Sports Minister has also been advised to take appropriate action against the other cricketers who engaged in undisciplined activities during this visit.
A two-page letter containing the Attorney General’s recommendations was forwarded to the Sports Minister on Friday with the signatures of Additional Solicitor General President’s Attorney Sumathi Dharmawardena and Deputy Solicitor General Manohara Jayasinghe.
