In a significant move aimed at bolstering Sri Lanka’s health policy framework, Mrs. Devika Kodithuvakku has been appointed as an executive member of three key health policy committees by the Samagi Jana Balavega. The announcement was made by opposition leader Mr Sajith Premadasa, signalling a strategic endeavour to enhance the nation’s healthcare initiatives.
Mrs. Kodithuvakku’s appointment encompasses executive roles within the Samagi Jana Balawega Health Policy Making Committee, the National Family Health Services Policy Making Committee, and the Disease Prevention Policy Advisory Committee. With her extensive background in healthcare advocacy and social activism, she brings a wealth of experience to these pivotal positions.
Born in August 1969 in Peradeniya, Mrs. Kodithuvakku’s journey into public service began early in life. She pursued her primary education at Peradeniya Sarasavi Uyana College before completing her secondary education at Hemamali Girls’ College in Kandy. Her passion for humanitarian work led her to join the Red Cross Society during her school years, where she quickly rose to the role of a Red Cross nurse.
Throughout her career, spanning over two decades, Mrs. Kodithuvakku has been a steadfast advocate for the rights of family health service officers. She has held various leadership positions, including Deputy President of the Federation of Public Service Trade Unions and Convener of the Federation of Health Professionals. Her unwavering commitment to healthcare excellence has earned her prestigious accolades, including the Sama Sri Deshabhimani Seva Merit Award and the Mass Lanka Honorary Award.
Furthermore, Mrs. Kodithuvakku’s contributions to the free health service in Sri Lanka have been recognized through her appointment as a Justice of the Peace for the entire island in 2003. Her latest appointment by opposition leader Mr Sajith Premadasa underscores a strategic vision to harness her expertise, knowledge, and talent for the advancement of the nation’s healthcare sector.
