Mayor Ranjan Jayalal says that the necessary measures are being taken to remove garbage that has accumulated along roads within the Kaduwela Municipal Council area.
He made this statement in response to complaints from residents, who alleged that the Kaduwela Municipal Council had failed to collect household garbage for nearly three weeks.
Meanwhile, as dengue continues to spread rapidly, residents are facing significant difficulties due to the breakdown of garbage management in several areas.
The continuation of this situation in areas with a high prevalence of dengue, including parts of Colombo, has become a serious public concern.
Health authorities have repeatedly urged the public to keep their surroundings clean amid the increasing spread of dengue. They have also advised residents to eliminate garbage accumulation and remove stagnant water, which can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
While residents are able to clean their own gardens and premises, the collection and disposal of large volumes of garbage remain the responsibility of the relevant local government authorities.
Against this backdrop, the disruption of garbage management services in the Colombo District, where dengue cases remain prevalent, is raising serious concerns.
The current rainy weather has further worsened the situation, with garbage in some areas mixing with rainwater, creating additional environmental and public health risks.
