In a resounding show of strength, Democrats scored sweeping victories in the first major elections of Donald Trump’s second term—a political jolt that could shape the battle lines heading into the 2026 midterms.
According to CNN projections, Democrat Zohran Mamdani will become New York City’s next mayor, marking a historic first as both the city’s first Muslim and first South Asian to hold the office. In gubernatorial contests, Abigail Spanberger triumphed in Virginia, becoming the state’s first female governor, while Rep. Mikie Sherrill claimed victory in New Jersey, making her the state’s first female Democratic governor.
Californians also handed Democrats another win by approving a ballot measure supporting the party’s redistricting initiative, further consolidating Democratic influence in key battleground regions.
The elections were widely viewed as the first major electoral test of President Trump’s second term. In a post on social media, Trump attributed the GOP’s poor showing to the recent government shutdown and his absence from the ballot—remarks that underscored growing tension within Republican ranks.
Virginia’s Ghazala Hashmi, projected to become lieutenant governor, will make history as the first Muslim woman elected to statewide office, adding to the Democrats’ night of groundbreaking wins and signaling a renewed wave of diversity and energy within the party.
