COPE Chair for Ruling Party, COPA for Opposition: Leader of the House Explains Committee Appointments
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake today provided clarity regarding the appointments of chairpersons for two key parliamentary committees: the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) and the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE).

He stated that the chairmanship of COPA will be allocated to a member of the opposition, ensuring their representation in overseeing public accounts.

However, the chairmanship of COPE will be entrusted to a ruling party MP. This decision, he explained, stems from the committee’s mandate to investigate the activities of the previous government. Appointing an individual implicated in the previous administration as chairperson would compromise the integrity of these investigations.

This approach, he emphasized, aims to uphold accountability and maintain transparency in the work of these critical parliamentary committees.
