Concerns Grow as Easter Attack Reports Remain Unpublished Despite Revealing Controversial Findings

After former President Ranil Wickremesinghe assumed office, two special committees were established to investigate the Easter Sunday attacks, and both have submitted their final reports.

The first committee was formed on September 11, 2023, following Wickremesinghe’s election as President. Its primary objective was to investigate the revelations made by Channel 4 concerning the Easter attacks.

The committee was chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge S.I. Imam, with retired Air Force Commander Jayalath Weerakkodi and President’s Counsel Harsha A.J. Soza serving as members. This committee submitted its final report to President Wickremesinghe on June 25, 2024.

A second committee was appointed by President Wickremesinghe to investigate allegations regarding the failure of intelligence agencies to prevent the attack, despite prior warnings of an imminent threat. This committee, chaired by retired judge A.N.J. Alvis, was formed on June 12, 2024, and delivered its report on September 14, 2024.

However, there is growing concern over the government’s decision not to disclose the findings of both these reports to the public. Current information indicates that the reports contain highly controversial details, prompting widespread calls for their immediate release.
