Colombo District Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Uditha Liyanage has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Sri Lanka Latest News reports.

The arrest is linked to the ongoing investigation involving his wife, who was previously taken into custody in connection with a treasure-hunting incident in the Thibirikadawala area of Sravastipura.

Recently, the Anuradhapura Police arrested eight individuals, including the DIG’s wife, for allegedly digging for treasure on land situated near a temple in Thibirikadawala, Sravastipura. The arrests were made following information received by the police on the 13th, indicating that a group was engaged in illegal treasure-hunting near the Ratrang Devalaya in the same area.

It has also been reported that the DIG had attempted to exert pressure on the police officers who carried out the raid, allegedly urging them over the phone to release the arrested suspects.

To investigate these claims, Anuradhapura Acting Magistrate Chandana Weerakoon previously ordered all telephone service providers to provide police with analysis reports of the phone numbers belonging to the suspects.
