Chikungunya Risk Alert in Colombo and Gampaha Districts, Says Epidemiology Department
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Epidemiology Department has issued a warning regarding the potential spread of Chikungunya in several regions of the country.

According to Epidemiologist Dr. Chinthana Perera, the risk is particularly high in parts of the Colombo District, including Kaduwela, Gothatuwa, and Battaramulla, as well as in densely populated areas of the Gampaha District.

Dr. Perera noted that Sri Lanka experienced a significant outbreak of Chikungunya in the years 2006, 2007, and 2008.

He explained that common symptoms of the disease include fever, body aches, tremors, and joint pain accompanied by swelling. While most patients typically recover within a few days, some may experience prolonged joint pain.

Dr. Perera emphasized that the disease is transmitted by the same mosquito that spreads dengue. However, it is not contagious from person to person.

He further advised that special caution should be taken by pregnant women, children, and individuals with chronic health conditions, as they may be more vulnerable to complications from the disease.
