Former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake stated that the Central Bank of Sri Lanka was expected to maintain foreign reserves of US$7.2 billion by the end of this year, and emphasized that the Central Bank must now clarify whether this target has been achieved.
The MP further questioned whether the Central Bank has effectively protected the value of the Sri Lankan rupee while also maintaining its institutional independence.
He also referred to the President’s instructions to provide relief to those affected by the recent disaster, noting that the Central Bank Governor has stated that loans would be provided instead of direct aid. In this context, the MP questioned how the government and the Central Bank plan to explain these decisions and circumstances to the public.
