Due to the lack of a satisfactory response to their demands, the trade unions of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) have decided to commence a six-hour token strike from 12.00 noon to 6.00 p.m. today (26).
A total of 21 CEB trade unions have informed the Minister of Power and Energy of their decision by letter yesterday (25), stating that their action is aimed at safeguarding the rights of all employees.
In the letter, the unions emphasized that no positive response has been received thus far regarding the eight demands they have submitted.
They further stated that, under the circumstances, employees and the trade unions representing them have no alternative but to resort to industrial action in order to secure the relevant demands.
Accordingly, the unions noted that the prolonged delay in addressing what they describe as reasonable and just demands has compelled them to launch this six-hour token strike.
The trade unions also stressed in their letter that neither the employees of the CEB nor the unions representing them should be held responsible for any adverse consequences arising from the strike. They asserted that full responsibility rests with the subject Minister and the current government.
