Thalangama Police have reported the theft of cash and valuables worth a total of Rs. 3,197,000 from a safe at the temporary residence of Thomas Daniel Levtis, a Danish economist working at the Sri Lanka branch of the World Bank. The stolen items include US$ 6,000, Rs. 97,000, two gold necklaces valued at Rs. 850,000, two gold coin pendants, a cross-shaped gold pendant, and three women’s gold rings worth Rs. 450,000, according to police.
Levtis, along with his wife and two children, has been temporarily residing in a house in the Wewapara area of Akuregoda, Thalangama. Additionally, a woman from Mirihana had been employed as a domestic worker at the residence.
In the complaint filed by Levtis, he explained that the foreign currency, other valuables, and gold ornaments were kept in a safe in his bedroom, with the keys located within the house. He last saw the items on November 3rd of the previous year.
Levtis further stated that on December 12th of last year, when he checked the safe in preparation for a trip to Katunayake Airport, he discovered that the property was missing.
The investigation is currently underway under the direction of Chief Inspector Roshan Anuruddha, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of Thalangama Police.
