In support of the monks’ decision to turn off the lights in the temples and leave them in the dark tomorrow (9) on the day of Wap Full Moon Poho in protest of the increase in electricity bills, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo, has informed that the lights in the churches of the Colombo Archdiocese should also be turned off.

According to this, the churches will be kept in darkness from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow, when the lamps in the temples are switched off.

This was said by Father Cyril Gamini Fernando during a press conference conducted today (8) at the Archbishop’s Palace in Colombo.

The increasing electricity bills have impacted both religious institutions and the general public. According to the Father, this symbolic protest is being staged since the higher electricity rates have impacted both the general public and religious institutions.
