The Cabinet has recently approved the removal of concessions granted to former Members of Parliament for the purchase of houses under the ‘Viyathpura’ housing project.
According to reports, the concessionary scheme resulted in the Urban Development Authority (UDA) incurring a loss of approximately Rs. 92.126 million, preventing it from covering the costs involved in the project.
As a result, the Cabinet has endorsed the proposal presented by the Minister of Urban Development, Advancement, and Housing to abolish the scheme with immediate effect. Furthermore, if the 29 former MPs concerned agree, the government will introduce a mechanism to allow the general public to purchase those houses at the same concessionary prices.
