BASL repeats call for impartial probe

President of the Bar Association Kaushalya Nawaratne, PC, yesterday (12) said that custodial deaths were unacceptable.

Referring to the latest killing of a suspect, within 48 hours of him being taken into custody, Nawaratne said that the Bar Association raised similar killings on many occasions but, unfortunately, the police seemed to be conducting ‘operations’ regardless of specific guidelines issued in such cases.

The Bar Association would issue an official statement regarding the latest incident, the lawyer said, underscoring the importance of ensuring protection for suspects, irrespective of whatever crimes they were suspected of. The PC asked for an impartial inquiry into the incident
