Taliban Bans Smartphones for Government Employees Nationwide

The Taliban regime in Afghanistan has imposed a nationwide ban on the use of smartphones by all government employees, according to foreign media reports.

The ban, which came into effect on June 16, applies to all officials serving in both military and civilian institutions, including judges.

Authorities have also warned that any government employee found violating the order will have their smartphone confiscated and destroyed, in addition to facing legal punishment.

Officials have stated that the ban has significantly disrupted government operations, noting that many official activities were previously conducted through smartphones using platforms such as WhatsApp and email.

The Governor of Panjshir Province has announced that the directive will be enforced immediately across all government offices in the province.

Human rights activists say smartphones have become an essential tool for the Afghan people, providing access to education, information, event reporting, and personal communication.

Human rights organizations further point out that since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban regime has imposed severe restrictions on women, the media, and civil society organizations.
