The Bar Association of Sri Lanka has formally written to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, raising concerns and providing recommendations regarding the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court.
In the letter, the association underscores the necessity of transparency, meritocracy, and strict adherence to legal and ethical standards in the appointment process.
Dated January 8, 2025, the letter highlights the judiciary’s pivotal role in safeguarding citizens’ rights and upholding the rule of law.
The Bar Association stresses that appointments should prioritize seniority, qualifications, and merit to preserve public confidence in the judicial system.
Noting that there are currently four vacancies in the Supreme Court, the association emphasizes the significant implications that filling these positions will have on the judiciary and the broader legal framework.
Additionally, the association calls for the implementation of criteria that uphold integrity, independence, and competence in the selection of judges for these crucial roles.
