The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) issued a press release regarding President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision on the Gender Equality Bill and reiterated that the President’s statement was a threat to the Supreme Court and the entire judicial system. The Bar Association also said that setting up a Parliamentary Select Committee to review the Supreme Court’s decision on the constitutionality of a bill would set a dangerous precedent.

The Bar Association strongly considers the recent parliamentary statement made by President Ranil Wickremesinghe suggesting the establishment of a Select Committee to review the decision of the Supreme Court referring to ‘judicial murder’ as an attempt to undermine the independence and power of the judiciary.

The Bar Association has further stated that the statement is completely beyond constructive criticism or a fair statement.

The Bar Association also says that it strongly believes that the judiciary should be allowed to act independently and without external influences.
