Authorities Uncover Diseased Pork Storage in Cold Facilities Ahead of Holiday Season in Ja-Ela and Surrounding Areas
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Secretary of the Food and Drug Inspectors Association, D.R.W. Bandara, announced that inspections of cold storage facilities have commenced in Ja-Ela, Wattala, Ekala, Negombo, Katana, and Seeduwa.

These inspections were initiated following reports that pork from pigs that had died due to swine fever was being covertly stored in cold storage units within these areas.

Bandara noted that, while these facilities typically store fish and chicken, there is evidence that pork is being stored as well. Further investigation revealed that certain traders are allegedly purchasing the meat of pigs that succumbed to disease at a minimal cost of approximately Rs. 100 per kilo, with the intention of selling it for Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,200 per kilo as the Christmas season approaches.
