Archbishop Cardinal Malcom Ranjith says that if a bridge is to be built connecting Sri Lanka and India, a referendum should be held and people’s consent sought. Sri Lanka Latest News

Attending a service held at the Ragama Tewatta National Basilica, Cardinal emphasized that the rulers of the country have betrayed this country to foreigners since history.

Cardinal, who further commented,

“We are selling pieces of our country to different countries and forces and taking various stupid decisions to lead this country to destruction. Those guys are building a bridge to India. What are the problems we have from India now? Do you remember that once they brought lentils? An army was sent to Sri Lanka. You remember we were forced to implement certain things based on their opinion. They were forced to load them on our shoulders. It will be good if another bridge is built. Who is telling these stupid stories? Our country has always been a free country. We have never been slaves of any state. It did not break away from another country. Sri Lanka was separate since then. The kings of this country dealt with the economic deals between Sri Lanka and India, but we did not enslave anyone. If our country fell to a foreign nation, dear brothers and sisters, it fell because of the betrayal of our leaders. The same thing can happen tomorrow. A special public opinion poll should be held for the idea of building this bridge. It is wrong to do these things without public opinion. We are really sorry for our country today. Having gained freedom, we now have to lose freedom. We will give thousands of acres of land to all the countries. Let’s break it into pieces. Then we will have nothing left. This is a sickness.”
