Yesterday (12), Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and the Alternative Policy Center filed two additional petitions with the Supreme Court, challenging the legality of the appointment of Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr. Deshbandu Tennakoon. The petitioners named MPs who are part of the Constituent Assembly as respondents in these legal actions initiated by the Center for Alternative Policy.
Previously, Law Professor Savitri Gunasekara and former provincial councillor of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, Mr Niroshan Padukka, had filed two fundamental rights petitions contesting the appointment of Acting IGP Deshbandhu Tennakoon. Their petitions argue that the appointment lacks the full support of the Constituent Assembly, as its members had opposed Mr Tennakoon’s selection for the role of Inspector General of Police. The petitioners urge the court to nullify the decision regarding his appointment.
