The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has received approval to reclaim 45 hectares of land within the Bay of Galle, paving the way for major infrastructure and real estate developments akin to the Colombo Port City project.
The initiative aims to transform the Port of Galle into a state-of-the-art tourism hub in the region. This week, the Coast Conservation and Coastal Resources Management Department (CCCRMD) gave the green light by approving the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project.
According to the EIA report, the proposed development will feature real estate projects, berthing facilities for passenger cruise ships, superyachts, and smaller boats, alongside provisions for water sports and leisure activities. These attractions are expected to establish the area as a premier destination for both local and international tourists.
The project includes the construction of two offshore breakwaters, measuring 850 meters and 150 meters in length, to ensure calm waters in the Bay of Galle and its harbor. Additionally, a modern cruise terminal is planned as part of the development.
The EIA also highlights that potential environmental impacts during the construction and operational phases have been carefully analyzed, with comprehensive mitigation strategies proposed to address them.
“If the recommended mitigation measures are properly implemented, the environmental impacts associated with the land reclamation under the Galle Port Development Project can be effectively managed,” the report stated, ensuring the project’s feasibility while minimizing its environmental footprint.
This landmark initiative is set to bolster Galle’s prominence as a key tourism and economic hub, contributing significantly to the region’s growth.
