Anura Makes Impactful Visit to the U.S.: Engages with Global Leaders to Discuss Sri Lanka

Meeting with the President of Portugal!

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is currently in the United States to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, held bilateral discussions with the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York on the 24th (local time).

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake warmly welcomed President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and following a friendly exchange, bilateral discussions commenced between the two leaders.

During the discussions, special attention was paid to enhancing trade and tourism relations between Sri Lanka and Portugal.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Mr. Wijitha Herath, Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and former Chief Justice, President’s Counsel Jayanta Jayasuriya, along with a group of senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were present on this occasion.

Bilateral Talks with the Australian Prime Minister!

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is in the United States for the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, also held bilateral discussions with the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York on the 24th (local time).

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake extended a warm welcome to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The leaders discussed further strengthening the economic and trade cooperation between Sri Lanka and Australia. Special attention was paid to the promotion of the tourism industry between the two countries, as well as exploring new investment and market opportunities.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Mr. Wijitha Herath, Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and former Chief Justice, President’s Counsel Jayanta Jayasuriya, along with senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in this meeting.

Bilateral Discussions with the Prime Minister of Pakistan!

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is in the United States to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, held bilateral discussions with the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York on the 24th (local time).

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake warmly welcomed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the two leaders engaged in bilateral talks to further strengthen the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Mr. Wijitha Herath, Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and former Chief Justice, President’s Counsel Jayanta Jayasuriya, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were present at the meeting.

Meeting with Donald Trump’s Special Representative for South and Central Asia!

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, attending the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in the United States, met with Sergio Gor — the U.S. Special Representative for South and Central Asia appointed by President Donald Trump, U.S. Ambassador to India, and Director of the White House Presidential Staff — at the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations on the 23rd (local time).

During the meeting, attention was focused on key sectors of mutual interest such as trade, commerce, tourism, and investment, and discussions were held on enhancing cooperation in these areas.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that, following an unprecedented economic crisis, Sri Lanka — now under a new government with a strong public mandate — is determined to maintain an active and closer relationship with the United States, prioritizing economic development and a prosperous economy.

He also highlighted the reform measures being implemented by the government to ensure long-term economic stability and transparency for the future of the people.

Both parties also reviewed progress in discussions between Sri Lankan representatives and U.S. authorities aimed at resolving the trade imbalance between the two countries, minimizing obstacles to bilateral trade, and reaching agreements that ensure fair and mutually beneficial trade relations.

Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, former Chief Justice and President’s Counsel Jayanta Jayasuriya, and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also attended the meeting.

Meeting with the President of South Africa!

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is in the United States for the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, met with the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, at ONE Plaza in New York on the 23rd (local time).

President Cyril Ramaphosa warmly welcomed President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Subsequently, bilateral discussions between the two leaders commenced, focusing on further strengthening the relationship between Sri Lanka and South Africa.
