A significant archaeological discovery in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district is offering fresh insights into the region’s ancient history. Excavations conducted at Jehanpora village have uncovered a 2,000-year-old Buddhist site dating back to the Kushan period, featuring stupas and monastic structures. The excavation was initiated following the discovery of rare photographs in a French museum, which helped identify the site. This finding highlights Kashmir’s historical importance as a major Buddhist centre along ancient trade and pilgrimage routes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the discovery as a moment of pride, stating that it opens a window into Kashmir’s long-forgotten heritage.
