The international, high-speed passenger ferry service between Nagapattinam on the east coast of Tamil Nadu and Kankasanthure in the northern province of Sri Lanka resumed this morning after a gap of almost four decades. Sri Lanka Latest News
Indian Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and Tamil Nadu Minister for Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports E.V. Velu gave the command to start the journey of the vessel from Nagapattinam port.
This high-speed vessel named Cheriyapani started its journey from Nagapattinam port at around 8.15 am with 50 passengers and 12 crew members under the command of Captain Biju George.
Through video messages, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe appreciated this diplomatic effort and emphasized the importance of launching the ferry service between the two nations.
Shipping Corporation of India has tied up with a private firm to sell tickets.
The ferry has a capacity of 150 passengers and departs from Nagapattinam at 07:00 AM and reaches Kankasanthuraya at 11:00 AM, returning at 01:30 PM. It reaches Nagapattinam at 05.30 PM.
