Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya stated that the Police Commission is currently unable to fulfill its administrative duties due to the internal control issues within the police force.
He explained that when the IGP is unable to make appointments, enforce discipline, or implement transfers, the role of the IGP becomes largely ceremonial, hindering the ability to take necessary actions.
Reflecting on the appointment of OICs, Mr. Weerasuriya acknowledged that a misinterpretation had occurred. After consulting with the Attorney General, it was clarified that it was not the appointment of OICs, but rather their transfer.
Furthermore, Mr. Weerasuriya emphasized that he had persistently requested the removal of OICs and strongly believed that the IGP should be given the authority to address matters concerning OICs. He noted that this issue has contributed to the decline in discipline within the police force.
