Mr. Ranjith Somawansa, who was the chief organizer of Agalawatta Sri Lanka Freedom Party, met the opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa and joined the Samagi Jana Balawega.
He worked as the Minister of Health, Local Medical Affairs, Probation and Child Care of the Western Provincial Council for a while, and as the Minister of Education, Culture and Arts, and accomplished many outstanding works during that period.
A graduate of the University of Colombo, Mr. A has also worked as a prominent student activist at that time.
He, who served as the President of the Progressive Student Front of Colombo University and also the President of the United Student Front, entered politics through the Sri Lanka Freedom Party at the invitation of Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike.
Elected as a member of the Provincial Council in 1993, he is a figure with many decades of political experience who has held many positions including Speaker of the Western Provincial Council and Deputy Speaker of the Western Provincial Council.
