The Wattegama police said that a newborn baby was found under the Buddha statue near the road leading to the Maliadeva cave temple on the Wattegama Alkaduwa road.
The child has been admitted to Wattegama Hospital.
A senior police officer of the area told Lankadeepa that a group of local residents saw the child left under the Buddha statue and took him to the hospital.
A spokesperson of Wattegama Hospital said that the child is healthy.
The Wattegama police are also conducting investigations to reveal information about the mother who gave birth to the baby.
So far, no information has been revealed about the people who left the child at that place.
