A court in El Salvador has sentenced former President Mauricio Funes to 14 years in prison.
He was found guilty of having relations with criminal groups and dereliction of duty.
Foreign media reported that his former Minister of Justice and Defense has also been sentenced to 18 years in prison.
It had been revealed that Funes, who served as President from 2009 to 2014, was working with members of organized crime gangs for electoral gains.
However, the former president is currently residing in Nicaragua and in 2019, he was granted the citizenship of that country.
Foreign reports state that according to the laws of Nicaragua, even if a citizen of that country is accused of crimes by foreign countries, they will not be extradited to those countries.
About a year ago, a state of emergency was declared in El Salvador, and through this, more than 68,000 people suspected of being members of criminal gangs have been arrested.
