Despite gaining the support of nine additional members, the National People’s Force (NPF) continues to face a challenge in securing majority control of the Colombo Municipal Council.
A high-level meeting was held yesterday (19) at the NPF headquarters in Pelawatte under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, to address the ongoing governance situation following the government’s loss of majority power in the Council.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), the United Peace Party (UPP), and three independent groups—all of whom had secured seats in the recent local government elections. During the discussions, these parties and independent members expressed their willingness to align with the National People’s Force.
In the 2025 local government elections, the DNA secured 1 seat, the UPP secured 2 seats, Independent Group 2 secured 1 seat, Independent Group 3 secured 3 seats, and Independent Group 4 secured 2 seats—bringing the total additional support for the NPF to 9 members.
With its original 48 seats, the NPF now holds a total of 57 seats in the Colombo Municipal Council. However, the opposing bloc still retains 60 seats, maintaining a narrow majority.
Amid the continuing deadlock, Democratic National Alliance National Organizer Niluksha Kumara announced at a press briefing in Colombo this afternoon that a formal declaration regarding the DNA’s final position will be made tomorrow.
