The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has announced that 50 doctors attached to the National Eye Hospital are scheduled to resign this week, in line with transfer decisions issued by the Public Service Commission.

Speaking on the matter, GMOA Executive Committee member Prasad Colombage stated that the resignations were also prompted by certain hateful statements allegedly made by the hospital’s director and the Minister of Health.

Meanwhile, the GMOA reported that all specialist doctors affiliated with the association have withdrawn from cover duties starting from 8.00 a.m. today, resulting in the disruption of services at 164 specialist medical units across the country.

According to GMOA Chairman Dr. Sanjeeva Tennakoon, this action forms part of the ongoing trade union action initiated by the association. As a result, operations of specialist units—including operating theatres, intensive care units, radiation services, anaesthesia, obstetrics and gynecology, and psychiatric units—have been disrupted in several hospitals.

The GMOA further noted that patients seeking treatment continued to experience inconvenience today due to the ongoing trade union action.
