The National Union Seafarers of Sri Lanka (NUSS) is proud to announce the grand opening of “The Palace,” Sri Lanka’s first dedicated seafarer welfare centre. This historic moment marks a significant milestone in the maritime industry, providing essential support and services to our nation’s seafarers and their families.

The Palace, a collaborative initiative with the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and the ITF Seafarers Trust, is designed to be a haven for seafarers before and after their voyages. Located conveniently in the heart of Colombo, The Palace will offer affordable accommodation for seafarers preparing to board vessels, ensuring they have a comfortable and welcoming place to stay. Additionally, upon their return, seafarers will find a supportive environment to reconnect with their families and reintegrate into life on land.

“We are thrilled to open The Palace, which represents our commitment to the welfare of Sri Lanka’s seafarers. This has been a long overdue facility for our seafarers,” said Boa Athu, President and Chief Executive of NUSS. “This centre will serve as a vital resource, providing a sense of community and support for those who dedicate their lives to the sea. It is a place where they can gather, relax, and spend quality time with their loved ones before embarking on their journeys.”

The Palace will feature family spaces designed to foster connection and comfort. The center will also offer a range of services, including counselling, recreational activities, and access to essential resources, all geared towards improving the overall well-being of seafarers.

The establishment of The Palace is a testament to the collective efforts of the NUSS, and ITF (International Transport Workers Federation Global Union), highlighting the importance of collaboration in addressing the needs of our maritime workforce. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter future for seafarers in Sri Lanka.

The grand opening ceremony will take place on Thursday, March 20th, and we invite all stakeholders, seafarers, and members of the community to join us in celebrating this momentous occasion. Together, we can honour those who navigate our waters and ensure they receive the support they deserve.
