The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has strongly rejected the statement made by National People’s Power (NPP) MP Asitha Niroshana in Parliament on July 24 regarding the President of the Bar Association, describing the allegations as false and baseless.
In a statement issued by the Association, the BASL said the remarks amounted to an attempt to mislead the public by taking advantage of parliamentary privileges.
The Association further stated that the allegations are entirely false, unfounded, and made with malicious intent. It also stressed that political attacks directed against the Bar Association would not succeed.
The BASL noted that Sri Lanka’s legal community remains united and is prepared to face any challenge to its independence and integrity.
The Association also challenged MP Asitha Niroshana to repeat the same allegations outside Parliament, rather than under the protection of parliamentary privilege, if he is able to do so.
