The Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court has ordered the further remand of Venerable Balangoda Kassapa Thero and four other Buddhist monks until February 9.
The suspects, who are in custody in connection with the Trincomalee Buddha statue incident, were produced before the court today (February 2).
The case was filed by the Coastal Conservation and Coastal Resources Management Department, which alleges that an unauthorized hut was constructed and a Buddha statue was placed within the coastal protection zone of Trincomalee town.
The incident involves the incumbent of the Sri Sambuddha Jayanthi Bodhiraja Temple on Fort Road, Trincomalee, Venerable Kalyanawansa Tissa Thero, along with Venerable Balangoda Kassapa Thero, Venerable Sukhithawansa Tissa Thero, and Venerable Nanda Thero.
