Namal Rajapaksa Raises Concerns Over Media Suppression After MP–Police Incident
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa stated that it is unfair to attempt to punish individuals or media institutions that informed the country about the recent incident. He made these remarks while commenting on the alleged incident involving a police officer attached to the Suriyakanda Police Station and a Member of Parliament representing the National People’s Power (NPP).

Speaking further, Rajapaksa said that although the relevant MP had allegedly assaulted the police officer, no arrest has been made to date. Instead, he alleged that the government is attempting to suppress media institutions that reported the incident to the public.

Continuing his remarks, Namal Rajapaksa stated:

“We recently saw that a Member of Parliament from Malima had cultivated cannabis. When a police officer went to seize the cannabis, he was attacked. Another officer was transferred. The person who was attacked ended up in jail. It’s like ‘he hit me, he hit me’. The person who was beaten is in jail, while the person who beat him is free. The owner of the cannabis is free. The police officer who carried out the raid is in jail. The MP who assaulted him is free.

But this government is trying to suppress media institutions that informed the country and the world about this incident. Even the Inspector General of Police is not ashamed to allow the police spokesperson to address the country regarding this matter. Organized criminals are shooting people at every junction and killing them, yet these crimes are not being properly investigated. Meanwhile, the IGP does not intervene to protect the dignity of police officers or the police media spokesperson.

The Inspector General of Police and the police have now become the government’s media spokespersons, or the JVP’s media spokespersons.”
