This morning, President Ranil Wickramasinghe and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi met in Tokyo (27).

The Japanese Foreign Minister stated that Sri Lanka is prepared to take the lead in discussions with creditors regarding debt restructuring.

President Ranil Wickramasinghe expressed sadness about the collapse of Japan-Sri Lanka relations caused by the current government’s cancellation of several Japanese investments.

The President also stated that his administration is eager to restart the most critical projects for Sri Lanka that have been discontinued in this manner.

The President also stated that he anticipates Japanese involvement in renewable energy projects in Sri Lanka.

The Japanese Foreign Minister stated that Japan is willing to evaluate future project prospects in Sri Lanka, with a preference for renewable energy.

The foreign minister further added that activities have already begun to give additional job possibilities in Japan for skilled Sri Lankan employees by 2023.

The President expressed gratitude for Japan’s assistance in international affairs and stated that he expected to support Japan and India’s attempts to become permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

The Japanese Foreign Minister complimented the Prime Minister’s remarks and stressed the need to expand Asia’s representation on the global stage.
