The “Russian State Order for Friendship” represents the highest civilian honor conferred by Russia.
This distinguished award was presented to Dr. Weerasinghe in recognition of his long-standing contribution to strengthening diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties between Sri Lanka and Russia.
Notably, Dr. Saman Weerasinghe is the only Asian to receive this honor in the year 2025, marking a significant milestone for Sri Lanka’s presence on the global diplomatic stage.
An honorary graduate of Moscow Medical School, Dr. Weerasinghe previously served as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the Russian Federation from 2015 to 2018. He currently serves as the Secretary General of the Sri Lanka–Russia Friendship Association and the President of the Russian Geographical Society in Colombo. His leadership has played a pivotal role in enhancing cultural exchange, bilateral cooperation, and enduring friendship between the two nations.
