Sri Lanka Records Sharp Decline in Births and Marriages, Rise in Deaths – Registrar General’s Report

The Registrar General’s Department reports that the number of births recorded in Sri Lanka in 2024 has decreased by 80,945 compared to 2020.

According to the department, the highest number of births in 2024 was reported from the Colombo District, while the lowest was from the Mullaitivu area, with only 846 births recorded.

Statistical data show that the number of births in 2020 stood at 301,706, while in 2024 it had dropped to 220,761. The figures for the intervening years were 284,848 in 2021, 275,321 in 2022, and 247,900 in 2023.

Records from the Registrar General’s Department also indicate that the number of deaths in the country has increased significantly between 2021 and 2024. The reported figures are as follows: 132,371 deaths in 2020, 163,936 in 2021, 179,792 in 2022, 181,239 in 2023, and 171,194 in 2024.

Meanwhile, the same department’s statistics reveal that the number of marriages in 2024 has decreased by 12,066 compared to 2023.
