Police announced that an investigation has been launched against a group of Motor Traffic Department officials in connection with incidents of registering vehicles using false information. The probe is being carried out by the Central Crime Investigation Division.
According to police, eight vehicles registered with fraudulent details were seized in different parts of the island over the past few weeks.
Investigations revealed that these vehicles had been imported into the country through customs clearance but were later registered under the chassis numbers of old vehicles.
Initial findings confirmed the involvement of certain Motor Traffic Department officials in the racket. It was also discovered that data related to the registration of some vehicles had been entered into the computer system after official working hours.
Police further stated that statements from several Motor Traffic Department officials have already been recorded under court orders as part of the ongoing investigation.
