Police confirmed that the man had checked into the hotel several days earlier. His body was discovered hanging inside his room after hotel staff, noticing the room was locked, alerted authorities.
During the inquest, investigators revealed that a note recovered at the scene suggested he had been deeply distressed following the loss of a substantial amount of money at the casino.
While his death is currently being treated as an apparent suicide, further investigations are ongoing.
Authorities have not released the man’s identity beyond his age and hometown, according to media reports. The exact amount of money he is alleged to have lost has also not been confirmed.
Sri Lanka, in recent years, has imposed a special tax aimed at discouraging local residents from entering casinos.
