Marine Drive was found littered with garbage and in an unsightly condition on the morning of August 4, sparking concern among residents and commuters.
According to reports, a festive street fair held on both sides of Marine Drive on the night of Sunday, August 3, drew a large crowd and concluded successfully. However, post-event cleaning of the area had not been carried out as expected.
The responsibility for cleaning Marine Drive falls under the Colombo Municipal Council, which is currently led by Mayor Vrai Balthazar, elected under the banner of the National People’s Power Party.
Despite this mandate, waste including plastic and other refuse was seen scattered across the road and sidewalks, causing considerable discomfort to the public and raising questions about the council’s accountability in maintaining city cleanliness.
