The driver of the crane involved in a fatal accident near the Borella Cemetery this morning (28) has tested positive for marijuana, according to results from a medical examination conducted following the incident.
The accident occurred when a crane, used for felling trees, was travelling from Rajagiriya towards Borella. Near the Borella Cemetery roundabout, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle.
At the time, heavy traffic had built up near the traffic lights in the area. The crane first struck an electricity pole on the roadside before crashing into three motorcycles and two cars ahead of it. Despite the collisions, the crane continued moving forward without stopping.
Subsequently, two more motorcycles collided with the crane and became lodged underneath. The crane finally came to a halt at that point.
Tragically, one motorcyclist—a 62-year-old man—died on the spot after being crushed beneath the crane. Six others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Colombo National Hospital for treatment.
Police confirmed that the crane driver has been arrested in connection with the incident.
