A group of Members of Parliament and ministers, including the Deputy Minister of Tourism, who had arrived in Anuradhapura for an official tour, were unexpectedly stranded at Wekanda after completing a visit to the Nuwara Wewa area. The group found themselves locked in, with the gates at both ends of the Wekanda route closed.

The delegation included Deputy Minister of Tourism Ruwan Ranasinghe, Member of Parliament Professor Sena Nanayakkara, and North Central Province Governor Wasantha Jinadasa, along with several other officials. They had come to inspect the Nuwara Wewa area as part of a broader initiative to promote Anuradhapura as a key tourist destination.

As part of their visit, the Deputy Minister and his team called upon Atamasthanadhipathi Pallegama Hemarathana Thera and received his blessings, underscoring the government’s vision to transform Anuradhapura into a tourism hub.

During the tour, the group observed that the road leading to the Nuwara Wewa embankment was closed off with gates at both ends. One gate was later opened by officials from the Irrigation Department, allowing the team to proceed with their inspection.

However, upon attempting to leave, the group encountered an unexpected hurdle—the gates had been locked again, leaving them temporarily stranded and causing significant inconvenience.
