Presidential Committee Appointed to Probe Corruption in SriLankan Airlines and Airport Services

The Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Presidential Special Investigation Committee to probe allegations of fraud, corruption, and irregularities within the Airports and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Company Limited.

While SriLankan Airlines Limited has made contributions to the country’s economic development, the government has continued to bear a significant financial burden to sustain the airline. The company’s recurring annual losses have placed immense strain on the national economy.

There is growing public demand to transform SriLankan Airlines into a profitable, efficient, and technologically advanced state enterprise. Achieving this goal requires a formal assessment of past transactions and events to understand the factors that led to the current financial state of the airline.

In parallel, concerns have also been raised—by multiple stakeholders—regarding the operations of Airports and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Private) Company Limited, which oversees airport management in the country. These concerns have drawn the attention of the government, further emphasizing the need for a comprehensive investigation.

In response, the Cabinet has approved a proposal presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to appoint a Special Presidential Investigation Committee, chaired by former Auditor General H. M. Gamini Wijesinghe, to investigate alleged fraud, corruption, and irregularities in both institutions. The Committee has been tasked with reviewing incidents that occurred during the period 2010 to 2025 and submitting a detailed report with recommendations.
